19. Digital lives. The strange couple: David Minelli and Mata Hari

Do you know why it's been so hard for us to discover more about David Minelli? Because Minelli isn’t his surname, at least it wasn’t always. Three days before his eighteenth birthday, his family was lost in an airplane accident. At the time they said it was a missile, structural problems, or a bomb. The investigation is still classified. The passenger list included Lanfranco Rossi, his wife Ester Ancona, and their daughter Laura. Luckily, there was an American uncle, a certain Ruben Minelli, who was married to Ester’s sister, Sara, and who was the founder of ON-OFF, an IT consulting company in Boston.

This orphaned boy seems quite different from the David Minelli we know today. His school friends in Italy remember him as a math whiz who was obsessed with technology, and that the teachers gave him more difficult questions on exams so he wouldn't get bored.

He had lots of different girlfriends, but no one steady. He finished school and then went off to study in America. When people tried looking him up, he was never anywhere to be found. He graduated with top marks from MIT (as we already know from his biography). A study grant, awards and great hopes for his future. His uncle Ruben had no children of his own and wanted to adopt him. David Rossi became David Minelli. At first, he signed as David R. Minelli, but not much later the R disappeared, as did his old life.

Now it must be said: another man would have used this sort of tragedy to get into the papers. He would have written a book, a story of loss and rebirth, and he would have convinced himself that there was a reason for everything. Isn't this the age of sharing? But David Minelli tries to remain as anonymous as possible.

He’s obsessed with privacy. And that makes us suspect that he has a lot of secrets and maybe even a few skeletons in his closet. Oops, we mean his server room. But there is one thing we can tell you. David Minelli is now working on a new form of artificial intelligence, an algorithm that can learn from its own mistakes, that’s going to revolutionize home automation. It’s going to put an end to smartphones and tablets. It’s a voice controlled personal assistant so highly advanced and human-like that it makes existing devices look like toys in comparison. It’ll be able to book planes, trains, restaurants, medical visits, translate, turn on household devices remotely, switch on alarms and video cameras. The project is just a bunch of initials at the moment. It goes by the name of H21, the code name of a famous spy, better known as Mata Hari. But things get even more interesting. The experimental division known as “Cyber Security” is using niobium superconductors to produce electrodes similar to neurons that conduct electricity without resistance, filling the spaces between the superconductors with thousands of magnetic manganese nano-clusters.
